Free passage on the A8 motorway between Interlaken and Brienz

As part of the renovation work, the section of the A8 motorway between Interlaken-Ost and Brienz will be closed at night. Due to the repair of some bridges and retaining walls, traffic has been restricted to one lane in certain sections. During the summer break, these one-lane sections were rebuilt so that the A8 would be passable again on two lanes during the busy period.

However, due to the natural disaster in Brienz, the remaining one-lane section could only be put into use with a delay of approximately two months, in mid-October. The work is heavily dependent on weather conditions. Forecasts predict persistently low temperatures in the coming days and weeks, which will prevent further work. Therefore, it was decided to remove the one-lane section this week. In recent days, concreting work was still ongoing, and the edges next to the road were being asphalted to prepare the section for winter weather and ensure the possibility of snow removal.

During the night closure on November 19/20, traffic lights will be removed. From November 20, 2024, the section will be continuously two lanes again. Due to delays caused by bad weather, the work cannot be completed as planned by the end of 2024 (refer to the press release dated October 8, 2024). Currently, a detailed construction timetable is being prepared. ASTRA plans to provide information about the 2025 schedule before Christmas. (text: pd.jae/image: zvg astra)
